Anthony Vaccarello’s New Collection for Versus Has a ’90s London Beat

If it’s London, it must be Donatella! Today’s stop in fashion’s round-the-world travel itinerary is at Brick Lane in the East End of London, where Donatella Versace is throwing a launch party for the Versus collection you see here. It is designed by Anthony Vaccarello. And there’s a twist: As you might detect from looking at the asymmetric tartan kilts, the mohair sweaters, the substantial tailoring, and boots, this isn’t a resort collection, but the reveal of Versus for fall. Further: Click onto VersusVersace.com and you can snap up anything you see today.
Vaccarello is putting his own stamp on the collaborative enterprise, for sure. One of the reasons he and Donatella have hit it off so well is that Vaccarello has southern Italian heritage, just like the Versaces (both his parents are Sicilian), but his take on sexy is tempered by an upbringing in Belgium (Northern, dark, minimalist climes). So his version of Versus isn’t a bling-tastic, multicolored print affair, but something more restrained, inspired, Vaccarello says, by nineties Brit pop and Bruce Webers advertising campaigns for Versus, in the grunge years. Looking good . . .
