Will This Fall Sweater Trend Replace the Sexy Cardigan?

When you think of a typical fall sweater, you might imagine chunky cable knits, alpine-inspired fair isle pullovers, or wooly mohair turtlenecks. While these are classic cold-weather staples, there’s another style now making a comeback that hasn’t been seen much since its ’90s heyday: the knit polo.
Slinky, sheer knits that fit close to the body are the antidote to oversized and heavy sweaters that can barely fit underneath our winter coats — not to mention a transitionalfall jacket.
And with luxurious fabrics and low-slung necklines, it’s easy to imagine these retro polo sweaters giving the much-loved sexy cardigan a run for its money among It girls like Bella Hadid and Kaia Gerber. Until the cool kids catch on, we can look toward Prada’smost recent spring collection where breast-baring knits (available now on pre order!) were tucked into sleek skirts that fell just below the knee. (A similar top by Gucci was featured in a 1997 Vogue shoot with Shalom Harlow.)
Whether you're looking for something tight or loose, long-sleeved or short-, there are polo knits to match every kind of fall look (and weather). The style is transitional — it looks just as chic as a layering device as it does when worn alone. Here are 15 fine knit sweaters to shop this fall.
