The
American Music Awards takes fashion seriously. With hundreds of music’s top performers hitting the stage or packing the seats, the event’s outlandish red carpet has become almost as talked about as its honors. So when it comes to dressing the stakes are high. No one understands that better than
Ciara, the event’s host who sang, danced, and thrilled the crowd with multiple outfit changes. Styled by Maeve Reilly in looks from Balmain, Versace, and Mugler, she exuded glamour while presiding over two hours of speeches and high-energy performances.
While the outfits moved from ornate (a tangerine
Georges Hobeika catsuit covered in crystals) to understated (an oversized Balmain blazer adorned with a single stripe), artistry was the overarching theme. “It was super important to Ciara that all the looks represented who she is as an artist, and I think we achieved that,” Reilly said. “Each one gave a different feeling and mood.” With nine costume changes complete with new hair and makeup, the night wasn’t easy, but according to Reilly, it all went off without a hitch. “I am so honored and grateful to have been apart of such a major moment in her career,” she says. “We had so much fun working on this!”
Here, Reilly shares an exclusive look at the process behind the scenes.

Right after red carpet, we had about 45 min to get her ready for the performance! All hands on deck. Her glam Yolonda Frederick and Cesar DeLeon Ramirez did just as many glam changes as dress changes!! Lots of teamwork!

The Balmain look was shown with this necklace. I remixed the way they showed it with pants from a different look. Felt more Ciara! I added Jacque Aiche turquoise earrings and rings to tie the look together.

Bryan Hearns made her custom performance look. We decided everyone would wear different shades of brown to represent her new song, “Melanin.”

Obsessed with this Alessandra Rich look. Cesar was inspired by the hair from the Mugler runway show. We didn’t have enough time in the quick change to do the hair with that look, so we did it here.

Second Balmain look of the night — this was right before she went on stage!

This Azzaro was in our first fitting, and we loved it the second she put it on. Through our many fittings, this one stayed in the mix. Lots of edits to get to the seven looks we landed on.
